Careers at itemis

Build software that is actually used.

Since 2003, we have been building software for autonomous mobility, cybersecurity, and critical digital infrastructure. No show projects, no corporate bureaucracy — just real work with people who take their craft seriously.

What many IT jobs get wrong

Does this sound familiar?

Office mandates instead of trust

Three days of mandatory attendance, even though the work gets done just as well from home. Control instead of ownership.

Technical standstill

The same technology for years, no budget for training, no room for your own ideas — if you don't grow, you stand still.

Many meetings, little influence

Big announcements, small room for action. Decisions are made without you in the room.

Then it’s time for itemis.

Your path to itemis

Apply easily. Get to know each other honestly.

01

Apply without hassle

No lengthy cover letter needed. Your CV or LinkedIn profile is enough for the first step. We get back to you within three working days.

02

We get to know each other

A video call — no dress code, no hierarchy theater. We talk about your work, our projects, and whether the chemistry is right.

03

You become an itemis colleague

You receive the contract as a draft by email. After you sign, you get Slack access and your first day at our HQ at the Dortmund harbor — from then on, you're part of the team.

Who we are looking for

Your expertise is in demand

Software Developers

Java, Kotlin, TypeScript, Python — modern stacks, real production environments, no legacy graveyard.

System & Software Engineers

Embedded systems, model-based development, automotive — demanding domains with real complexity.

Cybersecurity Experts

Threat analysis, IEC 62443, ISO 21434 — you work on products and projects that don’t treat security as a checkbox.

Sales & Business Development

Technically savvy sales for software solutions that need explaining — with real customer contact and impact.

Marketing & Communications

Content, campaigns, events — for a company with substance that doesn’t play buzzword bingo.

Your benefits

What you get at itemis

100% remote or hybrid

No office mandate — whether from home, one of our locations, or on the road. You decide, not us.

4+1 professional development model

One day per week is yours: for courses, certifications, open source, or conferences — paid and planned in.

Flexible working hours

No rigid 9-to-5 rhythm. We look at results, not the clock.

Permanent contract

From day one — no trial-contract carousel, no fear of non-renewal.

Company pension scheme

We think ahead — beyond the job as well.

Job bike or transit pass

By bike, public transport, or company car — we support you however you want to get around.

Corporate benefits

Discounts, perks, and a health budget that makes a real difference in everyday life.

Health & sports

Health management, ice hockey, bouldering, sports programs — and office dogs, because that counts.

Genuine team culture

First-name culture, flat hierarchies, big company parties with families — no performance act, just real community.

Frequently asked questions

What applicants want to know

What do I need for my application?
Your current CV is completely sufficient. If you are active on LinkedIn, GitHub, Xing, or Stack Overflow, we’d love to see the link — but it’s not required. You don’t need a lengthy cover letter.
How quickly will I get a response?
As a rule, we get back to you within three working days. First comes an automatic confirmation of receipt — then the real response from a person on our recruiting team.
What does the interview look like?
Almost always a video call via Google Meet. No dress-code stress. We want to know who you are and what you can do — and we’ll tell you honestly how we work. Sometimes there is a short technical task that you can schedule yourself.
Is 100% remote really possible?
Yes. We don’t force anyone into the office — not for a single day. You can work at one of our locations at any time, but you don’t have to. Customer projects may occasionally require on-site presence, but that is the exception, not the rule.
What exactly does the 4+1 professional development model mean?
Four days per week you work on customer projects or internal topics. The fifth day you invest in your own development — courses, certifications, open source, conferences. Not as a bonus when time is left over, but as a fixed part of your paid working time.
What career paths are there?
Two equally valued paths: a technical career (Senior Engineer up to Technical Fellow) or people leadership (Team Lead, Manager). Neither of them is the “real” career. You choose what fits you — and together with you, we work out which criteria and levels apply to you.
What does onboarding look like?
Right after signing the contract, you get access to our Slack workspace and initial information. Your first working day takes place at our HQ in Lünen — hardware handover, introduction round, answers to your questions. After that, your team lead works out an onboarding plan together with you.
