Efficient State Machines for Home Appliances

BSH Hausgeräte GmbH

BSH reduced HMI development time by modeling appliance state machines with itemis CREATE.

The customer

BSH Hausgeräte GmbH (BSH) is one of the world’s leading companies in the home appliances industry and the largest home appliance manufacturer in Europe. With its outstanding brands, high-quality products and first-class solutions, BSH pursues the central goal of improving the quality of life of people worldwide.

HMI development with itemis CREATE

The software of the new household appliances such as the Bosch Cookit, the fully automatic coffee machine EQ700 and many other kitchen and household appliances is modelled with so-called state machines. BSH uses itemis CREATE to describe business logics and to develop these state machines, especially with appliances with human-machine interfaces (so-called HMIs).

With itemis CREATE, the time required has been significantly reduced and the efficiency of the HMI implementation significantly increased. In particular, the time required for creating and maintaining source code was significantly reduced thanks to the graphical modeling approach and the use of the C++ code generator.

The customer was particularly impressed by the ease of use of itemis CREATE. The comprehensive documentation, with many practical examples, enabled a quick familiarization. In productive use, existing models can be easily modified and extended.

The extensive Unit Test and simulation options integrated in the IDE round off the coherent overall package. Complex operating functions, for example “Guided Cooking” with Bosch’s Cookit, and various automatic programs can be simulated and tested quickly and easily with just a few mouse clicks after modeling.

A great plus of itemis CREATE is the easy handling, with a low hurdle for developers to modify or extend existing models. The extensive unit test and simulation options integrated in the IDE round off the package!

The simple syntax and the uncomplicated automation of unit tests represent a great quality factor. Correction times are reduced to a minimum by this mechanism, potential errors found before integration into the software source code.
